Great job Concordia girls, two in a row. Still a bunch of talent in the pipeline for a possible threepeat. Congrats.

Where was Ralmuto of Grace Prep at the State 4A meet?

The TAPPS 3A girls competition was full of outstanding individual athletes and performances, such as Division 1 college track signees Erica Twiss of Carrollton Christian, Jessica Shadley of Carrollton Prince of Peace and Shanay Briscoe of Houston Cypress Christian. But for the 6th consecutive year, the best team was Colleyville Covenant Christian Academy. Despite injuries and illnesses, the CCA girls overcame the strong challenges of Carrollton Prince of Peace, Waco Reicher, Amarillo San Jacinto and Carrollton Christian to claim another state championship title. The Lady Cougars were led by senior Kourtney Squires, who placed 2nd in the 100 meter dash and ran strong legs on the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays, and senior Rebecca Lex, who overcame a bout with the stomach flu to place 4th in the 200 meter dash and run great legs on the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. Freshman Katherine Meadows was also very productive, placing 2nd in the 300 meter hurdles, 3rd in the pole vault, 5th in the triple jump and running well in two relays.

Waco Reicher won their 2nd straight 3A boys track title, outdistancing Austin's Texas School for the Deaf, Carrollton Prince of Peace and Colleyville Covenant.

Also St. Michael's Boys take the 5A state title two years in a row. Dennis Hodapp (University of Tulsa, track), Mike McNamara (Air Force, football), Mitch Morse (Missouri, football), and Elliott Petterson (Washington University, track) were an outstanding group of seniors.

Great effort by the Colleyville Covenant girls. With over half their points coming from relays they clearly took advantage of Texas giving double points for relay events. The double points combined with TAPPS limiting athletes to 3 running events weakens the field in the open events and I think distorts the team competition. I doubt TAPPS will change their position on this but doing so would be better for the athletes.
Offline
As soon as the UIL changes its position on double point relays, TAPPS will follow suit. As for the 3 running event limit, you'll have to complain to the NFHS for that one (although some states may use an exception and Texas could use a similar one if they so chose, again that would follow the UIL to TAPPS path).
Many track people agree with the opinion of single point relays. I agree with that sentiment as well, personally I think it makes the meet too sprint heavy. However, the people in power believe that double point relays place a higher emphasis on the "team" as opposed to the individual (at least that is the only logical justification that I've heard, if someone wants to enlighten me please do so).
Of course the UIL 1A Girls team title has been won by a "team" of 1 the last 2 years, so it doesn't appear to be working

I'm not for taking out the double points for relays. It places more emphasis on the team and gets more kids to the big meets.
The one thing I would like to see change for TAPPS is have qualifing times to get to the state track meet instead of the elimination rounds at regionals and district. Many states have qualifying times that if you run at meets during the year, you make it. This would ensure all the athletes are at the state meet, as there is many times some disperancy between the regions. Typically, the North regions are dominant in the sprints and hurdles while the Southern Region domintates the distance events (at least in 4A).
Have a 3 day meet, do prelims and then take the top 8 to the finals.
Thats what I would say do. I don't think the UIL is going to do either the prelims or take away the double points in the relays any time soon.

Unfortunatley Rumalto yanked a hamstring at the regional meet the week before in the pole vault. He was unable to run in any of the running events and then attempted to warmup for the pole vault but was just too injured. Never has recovered from the ruptured achilles he suffered his soph year in the 200m at state.
Good kid, tough injury.

Kudos to the Lady Cougars. They were strong and well trained as always. Guys to were outstanding. Prince of Peace is proposing a meet next year of the top 8 track programs in TAPPS at an invitiational they would host. I would hope that Colleyville Covenant was there as part of the great 8!

West, when I ran in TAPPS in the late 1980s there were qualifying times for the State meet. Don't know when they did away with that.

WestTexasFBisBest, the Prince of Peace Meet of Champions sounds like a great idea! We would definitely enjoy the competition from other strong TAPPS track programs.

Congratulations to Destiny Roseman of TC- Cedar Hill. Not only did she break the Tapps state record this year in Triple jump, she received a full scholarship to Duke! Destiny is an outstanding young lady. She is graduating valedictorian from Trinity. TC-Cedar Hill is extremely proud of her and her brother Kenny. Kenny is on scholarship at University of North Carolina and had an excellent freshmen season. It should be a fun sibling rivalry between the tar heels and blue devils.

Congratulations to Destiny. As a Duke alumna, I can say she is exactly the kind of outstanding person that will continue the tradition of academic and athletic excellence. Chapel Hill is a pretty nice place too.

I was there when that happened, and unfortunately I suffered the same injury the Fall of that school year. Folks, let me tell you how important it is to go to Sports Doctors and Sport Specific Physical Therapist. I have made a full recovery, and I promise you if I used General Practice Doctors I would not have made the recovery I did.
